The first forecast of tho cotton crop of Eastern Bengal and Assam, 1911-1912, by tho Department of Agriculture, under dato of August 7, states that owing to an almost unbroken succession of showery days ever since the beginning of April sowings of cotton were generally a little earlier than usual, and the area sown is estimated at 101,300 acres, being I'M acres more than the revised estimate for last year. Some damage has booh done in Ilill Tippcra nnd the Garo Hills by excessive rain, but on tho whole tho crop is in good condition, especially in the Chittagong Ilill tracts.
