(Dy Telccraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, October 27.. Mr. E. C. Bruce, of Huntcrvillc, un-derwent-a second operation in n private hospital at Palmerston this morning with successful results. He is reported to bo progressing satisfactorily. evening the Works Committee of tho Borough Council discussed the matter of providing filters in connection with tho water supply, but, in view of the fact that particulars and cost of filters were expected in the course of a few days, no action was taken. The animal sports in connection with tho High School were to have- been held to-day, but had to be postponed on account of the inclement weather. Loyal Manawatu Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., met last evening, Bro. W. E. Mathieson occupying the chair. It was resolved to hold a Lodge of Instruction at the next meeting. At the conclusion of the business, a quoit match was played. This was won by Bro. S. J. Watson. "A Talk on Musketry" was given at the Manawatu Officers' Club last evening by Captain Skelly, of Napier. Colonel Chaytor also spoke on the same subject. A presentation of a handsome dressingcase was made to Mr. H. P. Muller, manager of the Palmerston Opera House, last evening, by the staff of the theatre, as a token of esteem. Tho judge's medal for the best general gymnast was presented to Mr. George Forrin by the Rev. H. G. Reseller at a practice of tho Gymnasium Club last evening.
