MIRAMAR FIRE BRIGADE.

-9 ■ A START MADE. A deputation from the newly-formed Miramar Volunteer Fir? Brigade waited on the Miramar Boronjrh Council last evening to ask for financial assistance to place the brigade on a working basis. The deputation pointed out that the brigade seemed to bo an absolute necessity for the borough. They would bo glad of any assistance which the council would bo able to give, and the rest it was hoped to raise by means of some social function, or by a canvass of residents. The Mayor (Mr. J. Brodic) remarked that hoses and fire-plugs had been provided in connection with the water supply. Ho was quite sure that the council was in sympathy with the movement, but it appeared to him that it would bo hard on the residents to ask them to contribute towards means of preventing fires when the insurance companies were really the people who benefited. lie thought that the brigade should appeal to the building companies in the district for assistance. The deputation stated that application had already been made in that quarter. They had also applied to the insurance companies, but had not received any encouragement from them. It was not only property, however, that the brigade wished to protect. They wished to protect life also. After some little discussion tho Mayer advised tho deputation that the question would bo considered by the council, and the result communicated. later, the matter was further considered by tho council, and, on the motion of Councillor Bowie, seconded bv Councillor 8011, it was decidrd to vole ,£IOO to secure appliances for tho brigade.
