NOTES AND COMMENTS. {By Glexcobl J. W. Lowe, with Effort, Iranui, and Mira, is leaving for Riccarton on Monday next. On the same evening, .). Avrcs goes south with Alerrivouia and Bracken. The latter is engaged in the welter events, and, if lie improves a little on his Trentham efforts, ho should bo heard of during the week. Little was a-foot yesterday in reference to the. New Zealand Cup. Goldlindor continues in the position of favourite, and, as such largo volumes have been laid against this good horse, there is liltle chance of him receding in the market. Goodwin Park is next in demand, being quoted at a point shorter than Los Angeles, Julostcri, Merrivonia, Domino, and Vice-Admiral, all of whom are on the same mark. Iranui and Prim are being supported, but the others are not asked for. Now that Goldlinder is on the scene, and galloping well, he is likely to continue in favouritism, but two miles is a long journey for a horse to successfully get to the end of, and tho fact that the other horses with chances have all done more racing than him, will stand to them when the field is ■racing up the long straight the second time. Of tlie twenty-one horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup, thirteen are owned by North Island sportsmen, ami the remainder in the south. The Norlh has also a big pull in the numbers for the Stewards' Handicap, so that, if (ho law of averages holds, (he northerners' chances of landing both stakes appear somewhat attractive. The issues, however, are not yet decided, and, in the Handicap especially, the South Island will have some warm representatives. Madam .Madcap, Stepmeler, I'eirene. and Culprit are all very fast, and have repeatedly proved their ability In gallop when pitted against the best of their age in the North Island. It may safely bo considered that Nvland will improve on his form at Treulham, anil, if this is so, the Jlighden horse must be hoaj-d of in the Stewards' Handicap. The irrepressible Oliver will 1.,0 on him, which is many pounds in his favour, and it is nearly an even-money proposition that, barring accidents, he will be lirst out of (he barrier. Then the long straight at Riccarlon will suit him better than a circular course, for ho is a big-striding animal, and, with ordinary luck, will not have to alter his stride once he gels under way. No fewer than forty-six horses were on '■oard the Llimaroa which sailed for

i Lyllelton last evening. Amongst (ho 1 number were (ho Porirua team of ti'u . liorses, J. Maher with Mr. E. J. Walt'a Scotch, Parable, Ire-, ) land, and .-mother; .]. J'rice, with Kilos- - ten', Bronze, Nyltind, Boanerges, and Kr- . niciißardc; A. Ncalo, with Vibration, Gold , linUerv, and linngialiio; F. S. Easton, , with Lady Montoa; A. lihodes, witk Klectrakolf; I' , . 'I'illey, with Equitas and . (loodwin I'ark; T. (inddnrd, with Mulea . liill .-Hid Patriotic; G. Morris, with St. 'J'oiipy; J. .lamieMin, with Allurement; ! 11. R. Telfnrd with San Lnss, and a nuni- [ bor of others. Thr Avondnle Stages winner, Monorail, , got cut in his box on Sunday, and sot '. his less a bit knocked about'(«ays tho Audi land "Star"). The i-on of Monofnrm , was on the caiir.v on Tuesday morning, , but was not exercised. F. M'Maneiiiin has still three engage<l I in tli« City Handicap at the Auckland , meeting, and if they all start, B. Dcc'.oy will be up on SouHoria, M. Rvan on , S<ri Elf, nnd J. Buchanan oil Maxwell. , Avaunee, who has been off (he scfno for some timo through a poisoned hind ■ leg, is now on a fair way lo recovery, , though the affected member is still swoJlen and unsightly. ; At the local track on Saturday morning I ho St. Clement's gelding Cloinocs, in R. Broiiffli's stable, beat Dow Bells over four fiirlennrs: n (tev B ot\ing tlio worst of the start (says (ho Hawera "Star"). At navrrley on Monday Clemoes (who was slow to betiin) ran second to Wild Lut/m in the Wilson Stalcps, paying a belter dividend than the winner." arid several who had witnessed the gallop referred lo were annoyed for not attaching more, importance to it. 'IV Auckland facing Club's spring meeling-a two days' fixture this yearcommences on Wednesday next. As Electrakoff is not a brilliant beginner, it is fjiiito likely that ho will bo withdrawn irom the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton. Byron, who won tlie Champion Plate at Trentham, was not entered for Uio Stead. Gold Cup at Riccarton. It is understood that Gladiolo will not sent south to coniDelc at tho Canterbury Jockoy Club's meeting. Probably her name will be missiii? from the Slowards , Handicap when tho iinal aoccptance.s aro published. Mr. R. C. AVallace, the Auckland sportsman, who is best known as tho owner of Ngamika, wrote asking F. Meaghcr to make the trip north to ride his (Mr. Wallace's) horses at tho Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting. AsMe.aghor will be engaged at liiocarlon riding Mr. Buiok's horses, he telegraphed yesterday declining Mr. Wallace's ofi'er. _F. 1). Jones will ride Goldfindcr in the New Zealand Clip and Formby in tno Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton, It is said that the lad on Lady Moutoa, in tho Nai Nai .Handicap at Treutliam on Monday mistook the winning post, and thought ho had won about 10 yards before the end of the journey. The lad had only had about three rides previous to this, nnd was in tho rear of the field on all occasions. His mistake on Monday is attributed to his excitement on finding himself in a winning position.
