[ Dr. Peacock, 71 years of age, was found [ guilty of the murder of Jlary Danes, , and sentenced to death. 5 Tho prisoner denied that lie told Polio ( (Daviess lovor) that the girl had died, t and that ho had secretly disposed of tho > body and burned tho clothes. Ho knew nothing of the whereabouts of Danes after sho left his privato hospital on August 23. Ho recognised now that it would liavo boon better had ho thought les3 of her secret and inoro about himself, and had frankly told tho detectives what ho knew. Tho Chief Justice (Sir John Mudden) strongly summed up against tho pri- ' soner. It was a particularly dangerous and heinous offence which had caused tho f death of the girl. It wtis a dreadful menace to tho community; it struck at " all that was best, from tho State's point f of new, in tho system of marriage prac- ; ticcs. Such men as I'eacock induced ' young girls to take tho risks and perils of an impuro life.
