(By Gi.escob.l Nominations for several events at tho spring and summer meetings of the Auckland Racing Club close on Friday night with the secretary, Mr. J. F. llaitlnud. A considerable amount of rain fell at Wangnnui yesterday. Our correspondent telegraphed last night, however, that the weather had cleared and thai' there was every prospect of a lino day for Ihe Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting, which opens to-day. The gallop of Equilns yesterday was the best of the morning, as the marc carried n good weight. The fact that .■.he was sent six furlongs lends colour to Ihe view that she will be n runner in tho mile race. The Guineas candidate. Royal Scotch, seemed to. tiro at the end of his gallojjj,

but Miscount gained many friends by the resolute manner in which he finished. Ireland is a very staunch favourite in (ho .Maiden Hack JiawliMp, in which he will bo ridden by C. Emerson. The following arc the starters and their riders in the Guineas to-day:—Royal .Scotch. Sat. 101b. (C. Jenkins); Miscount, Bst. 101b. ([•'. D. Jones); Kangiatua, Bst. 101b. (P. Meagher); Labuur Day. B<t. all). (\V. Price); Counterfeit, Ssl. 51b. <F. E. Jones); Bronze, Bst. 51b. (A. Oliver). The Highden stable lost another valuable youngster en Sunday morning. Olio of the two-year-olds hit out' and caught the Boniform—Kitchenmaid gelding on the forehead and killed him instantly. There is every probability of the Birkenhead mare. Our Queen, joining the stable of J. W. Lowe at Trenthani. I'. Lind, whose knee-cap was injured when he was bumped oft' l'leiades in the Avondnlo Steeples, is making a good recovery, but.is still on crutches. lie will not be able to ride for some time. Con the Shaughraun is now trained by J. Pine at flawera. Mendip, who is looking extremely well at the present lime, will not be a runner at Wanganui, hut will be reserved for the Trenthani and Eiccarton meetings. Immediately after Ihe Hawke's Day meeting the Native horseman, Eangi Thompson, will leave for Sydney to ride Hc-anga at the suburban meetings there. Thompson will bo the first 'Maori jockey who has ever ridden in Australia. Private advices received from Sydney state that the New Zealand jockey, Hector Gray, is at present an inmate of a private hospital in Sydney, his complaint being rheumatic fever. This is unfortunate for the crack horseman, coming as it does on the eve of such an important meeting as the Australian Jockey Club's gathering, which opens at' Enndwick on Saturday. The crack Auckland jockey, B. Dooley, is riding at the Wanganui meeting today, his mounts being Patriotic and Blakeney. After doing this meeting he will journey to Hastings and will then go south for tho Blenheim meeting, returning for Trenthani on October 22. By tho Moeraki, there arrived from Sydney yesterday Messrs. Stead's ' three-year-old chestnut colt Bandiero, and Mr. G. D. Greenwood's two-year-olds, Teviotdale and Canute. SYDNEY SCRATCHINGS. .
