NOTES AND COMMENTS. ;i!r Gi.f.ncof.] Cabled advices from Sydney state that Los Angeles started at a most remunerative price when ho won tho Chelmsford Stakes on Saturday." 'those Now Zealanders who supported the Stead Gold Cup winner will therefore have cause for rejoicing. Mention of O'Donnell's chestnut; recalls the bad luck of tho 'J'rentham jockey, W. Ryan, who refused the riding of Los An;;eles beeanse he thought Bobrikofi: a better horsr, and, in the end, the black champion did not niako the trip across tho Tasman Sea. St. Toncy narrowly escaped death at Ilawera one day recently, and it was only tho prompt attendance of a. veterinary surgeon that saved his life. His attendant was Riving him a dose of oil, but he administered it improperly, with the result that serious consequences were but narrowly averted.

Mr. N. D. WilsDn. owner of Lovell, has decided to throw tho Huntsman gelding out of commission tiil next season, and he is being railed to Hulls to-morrow. During his retirement he will be operated upon for his whistling trouble, and, if the operation is a success, h5 may do further useful service for his owner next season.

The Feilding jockey, W. Young, leaves for Auckland on Tuesday to ride Domino in the Avondalc Cup. He will return by the Main Trunk express on tho same evening, as ho is fully engaged at tha Otaki meeting next Saturday. While at tho Dannevirks meeting, tho writer was informed that Bobrikotf was never so well as at the present time, and tho Finland gelding is hitting out in a very free manner 011 the tracks. Tho other members of F. Davis's team are all doing well. Yet another throat operation on a racehorse is slated to be pending. This time Eclogue is tho horse to be treated. Nothing has improved so fast lately as Labour Day, a fine big tilly by Soult from a full-sister to lvopu and domiciled at Wavorlsy in Mr. Gardner's stables. If she continues to improve, at her present rate of progress the tilly in question will scon be ineligible to compete in haclc company. St. Petersburg, the three-year-old halfbrother to Danube, has been troubled with lameness in the off fore-leg lately, but will most likely bo able to start in tho Wanganui Guineas at tho end of the month. A full-brother to Effort is located in the stables of A. Attwood, at Feilding. He is a wonderfully well-grown colt, and is to be named Expect. Esmoh, the four-year-old full-sister to Tumut and Laiits, who still holds a maiden certificate, has leased by tho Waipukurau sportsman, Mr. I\. To- Hiang.i. Years ago he owned several good performers, but of recent years his colours have only been carried by secondraters. Flcttweek, winner of tlio Hack "Welter Handicap at the. Dannevirke meeting, is a full-sister to Yi, and Grandee. IJuring her short winter spell she lias furnished considerably, and is now a much improved mare in looks to what she was when racing at Napier in the winter. She runs ill the. ;amo colours as Yi. In connection with tiio Otnki Maori Racing Club's Spring Sleeting, owners aro reminded that acceptances for the first day's handicaps and entries for tho Maiden Plato close at 8.30 p.m. to-morrow with tho club's secretary, Mr. 0. J. D'Ath. ■Tho steeplechassr Nero is at tho present time working in a livery stable at Stratford, where he is used as a hack in connection with a mail delivery contract. Tlio chestnut's forelegs are apparently all right again, and T. Carson hopes to have tho Nestor gelding ready for steeplechase events next winter. Lycaon, who acted as runner-up in the J>oncaster St. Leger, filled third place behind his stablc-mato Sunstar in the Two - Thousand-last April. Ho won two races as .1 two-year-old. King William, who ran third in tho Leger, has disappointed his party in this season's classics, but when tho last mail left he had won three races, value i' 2900. Among the horses in work at Stratford is a three-year-old colt by the Carbine horso C'ampfire, from La Milo, that is well spoken of. The Ashbnrlon County Racing Club's meeting will be concluded to-day. A writer ill the Auckland "Star" says that since he had his first ride in tlio Avondalc Stakes, some eight years ago, B. Deoley has ridden the winner of tiio event on five occasions. This year ho will have tho mount 011 Prince Soult. Tho same journal states that M. Ilyan will ride Monoliac in the Avondalc. Stakes and Hemisphere in tho Guineas. Princo Palatine, winner of the St. Leger, belongs to tho Paraffin branch of tho No. (1) family, which in recent years lias produced such brilliant performers as Ciielandry, Flair, Cicero, Vivid, and Neil Gow. As a two-year-old, Prince Palatine started on six occasions, winning three times. His principal .success was in the rich Imperial Produce Stakes, which strangely enough had been won tho two previous seasons by Vivid and Neil Gow. In running through tho figuro analysis of the three-year-olds last January, tho Special Commissioner of tlio London ''Sportsman" said he did not like "the individual Prince Palatine sufficiently well to regard him as a probable classic winner," but 110 admitted that ho was exceptionally well-bred, a,ml remarked that in the colt's pedigree "the intervention of tho apathetic Isinglass (sire of Prince Palatine s dam) between Persimmon and the brilliant Glare should make for stamina and equable temperament." So successful has tho Paraffin family been in England during recent years that very few members of it have found their way to the colonics, but Traquair and BrightSteel are doing stud duty in the Commonwealth and in the Dominion Bezonian (a half-brother to Cicero) is at the Waikanae stud. TIIO programme of tho Waverley-Waito-tara Bacing Club's meeting, which is to bo held 011 the Waverlcy Bacecourso on Saturday, October 2-3, is advertised in this issue. Tho Wairarapa Racing Club will give in stakes for its summer meeting the sum of .C19;!0, this being an advance of ,±'3s on the corresponding meeting last vear. Tho Wairarapa Cup ivill be allotted i 350, and the Racing Club Handicap, run on tho second day, ,£2:]o. The latter race will be known in future as tlio Tauherinikau Handicap. Formerly the name of the racecourse was attached to one of the minor events. FIXTURES, September 15—Ashburton County R.C. Sprftig. September 20 and 23—Avcndalo J.C.
