NOTES ON THE EACING. (By Telccraph.—Press Association.) Dannevirke, September 13. Bright' sunshine prevailed at tho. start of the Dannevirke Club's Steeplechase meeting, but rain fell later, and there was only a moderate attendance. lue public were enthusiastic, particularly over the steeplechases, which proved to be very popular. The fields were of average size, and somo good racing was witnessed. Mescot, who is improving daily, scored by half a head only in the Hunters Hurdles, after a good finish with J aukman, who led tho whole way. Kualam : wha fell at tho first ience, and lliuntungi came down ove.r her. Fortunately both jockeys escaped" with nothing worso than a shaking. Jackman was unlucky to lose, and, had his rider been moro vigorous on him over the last furlong, JNescot might not havo got up. Connecticut and Gargoyle were the official scraichings in tho Maiden Hack Steeples, but, alter Commodore had done a preliminary canter, ho was brought bnck to the bird-cage, a»d was not allowed to.start, as he had forfeited his maiden status by winning at the. Mauawatu Hunt Club meeting. Tho race was a chapter of accidents, and everything but Wirihana ieil or ran oil'. At the first fenco Soman took off too far, and came down, and Watershed fell over him. Wirihana and Gleumoro raced over the nest circuit together, but tho latter outjumped Wirihana, and led by five lengths at the double opposito tho stand on the second timo round. Here Gleumoro ran off and Wirihana was left with a good lead. Tho Plough ran up to him at tho back of the course, but lost ground at tho sod wall, and the next fence brought him dowu. . Wirihana was then allowed to run" home alone. The Plough' was afterwards re-mounted, and got second money. Loch Maben, Tuataki, and Harekoa, were scratched for the Rauniati Welter Handicap, leaving seven horses to run. Epsom Lass was a good favourite with Gold Circle (who looks a much improved horse) next in demand. The pace was miserably slow for the first six furlongs, Ariom acting as pilot. At the half-mile Oliver got a break, and no efforts of the others could reduce it. Epsom Lass was pulling double in third place on passing tho stand for tho first time. It might havo been better to have given her her head. She is an unlikely starter at Avondale, as R. rough is unablo to get a suitable rider. might havo been bettor to let her out. Sho is an unlikely starter at Avondalo, as E. Brough is unablo to get a suitable rider. The whole of the acceptors went to the post in the big Steeplechase, and a fino race resulted in favour of Pleiades, whom Lind handled in a masterly manner. At tho first fenco Wirral jumped in front of Sir Lethe, Lovell, and Pleiades. Down the back tho field strung out, with Maidi a long way last. Passing the stand the first time tho order was: Wirral, Sir Lct'hc, Lovell, Pleiades, Whimper, Connecticut, with Maidi a long way back. At tlio next fence Lovell crashed through, and lost his rider. Wirral and Sir Lethe were now a lonp; way out from Pleiades, but the sod-wall brought Wirral to the ground, and nearly did tho same with Sir Lethe. The last-named rocked badly. At the hencoop at the bottom of tho straight, Pleiades ran past him, and won a good raco by two lengths. Connecticut was a long way buck third, and then enmo Winiata and Whimper. Flamingo fell at tho double on the second round, and The Chief at the last fence. Maidi was pulled up. Oxton and Golden Water were withdrawn from Hie Hurdles, leaving four runners. Windage. To Whotu, and Donzel divided favouritism, and after a very tamo race. To Whofcii won easily. Windago 'was facing the wronj; wny when tlio starter call "Go." ami tool: iki part in the raco. Te Whetii jumped wretchedly, and nearly unseated Youiib twice. Merrip Lawn, as usual, limn; out badly, and Donzol jumped very slowly. The Hunters' Hurdles went to Heckles?, Hie favourite Sylvia Maid bring linab!e to gain a place. In Ihn Umuboroa Hack Welter, (he favourite, San Time. le<i (o within three chains of the post, but there FloctwHc, an outsider, came alonr; with a determined run, and won by a length.
