MR. EUSTACE LANE AT HASTINGS.

HIS EVANGEL AND CREDO. (By Telecraph.— Special Correspondent.). / Hastings, September 13. Mr. Eustace Lane opened his campaign for the Hawke's Bay seat by an address in the Princess Theatre last night. Thoro was a lnrgo attendance. Mr. Lane describes himself as an Independent Labour candidate, but he scon showed that tho latter half of his self-bestowed appellation did not imply any adherence to trades unionism. Batlior did it mean that lie took the broader view of tho term "labour," and he sought particularly to represent the labourer who Wis the soil Mr. Lano's address, which was of an unconventional and breezy nature, dealt chiefly with tho land question, and ho afllrmcd tho desirability of taxing the productive capacity of land, and not tho land itself. Thus a landowner who had a good year would pay tax that year, but, after a lean season, he would not pay tax. On the liquor question Mr. Lane proclaimed himself in favour of Slate control. I'nrty matters were left alone by tho candidate., but ho severely criticised the land administration of the present Government.
