NO ZOO FOR AUCKLAND.

(By Tdecraph.—Special Correspondent.! Auckland, August li. After all Auckland is not to have a Zoo. The prospective proprietor, Mr. Boyd, has just received an offer from tho management of Professor Bickerton's Wainoni Park. Chrisicburch, and gees south to-night to make final arrangements before transferring the larger animals thither, lie stales that he has receive! so much opposition from the Health Department nnd tho Onehnnga Borough Council that he does not consider it advisable to keep olher than small animals in the grounils lie recently acquired. Dr. Jlakgill. District Health Officer, told a reporter this morning that the conditions imposed by the Health Department regarding the Onehunga Zoo were* t|uito moderate and perfectly -reasonable. No objection had been maila to ihe sii<* chosen, and they had merely asked that the building, cages, etc., should bo properly constructed of good timber nml well arranged from a sanitary point of view. The quantity of food generally to be found 011 Ihe floors of Ihe cages was a great attraction to ruts, and the Department wished to have th? building ns ral-proof as possible. Tho Zoo silo was in a good residential district, and precautions had to be taken io prevent a nuisance being created. It had been stipulated (bat the cages of tho lnrger, ;md possibly more offensive, animals should bo at least lift, from the boundary, as was the rule wiUi fowl-houses. Tliey had also asked that a proper soakage "drain 1» laid down until such timo as connection with a sewer could bo made. Mr. Boyd, however, was unwilling to meet them, and appeared lo wish to erect, buildings of a mere temporary and cheaper character, hence the disagreement. If tho Zoo had been at. "a greater distance from human habitations, the requirements would have been somewhat less stringent, but undsr tho circumstances they were not unreasonable.
