A crowd of a thousand strikers scoured the town for free labourers, severely clitts(ising them when caught. A policeiAan, who wa.s protecting a frea labourer, was struck by a stone. Several arrests have been made. Similar scenes occurred at Bnndaberg, the sight of a free labourer being tho sign for riotous behaviour ou the part of strikers. ! MATTERS QUIET IN BRISBANE. Sydney, August H. Matters, in connection with the Queensland sugar strike are quiet. Both sides are waiting for details of tho Brisbane conference, Tho steamer Miutaro, with two thousand tons o£ sugar on board, arrived, but, after being a couple of hours at tho wharf, sho was ordered to _Newcastle, ostensibly for bunker coal. No attempt was made to discharge tho sugar. PROPOSED REMOVAL OF DUTY. Melbourne, August 14. Mr. W; 11. Hughes, Attorney-General, has received a telegram to tho effect that tho conference at Brisbane between tho sugar-growers and the workers' representatives has arrived at a,u agreement. Tho conference will meet again tonight. Tho Federal Prinio Minister (Mr. FisherO declines to ifiacuss tho suggested remission of tho Customs duty on sugar. ====== «
