(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) • "OUT OF THE BACK DOOR," A HALF-HEARD STORY. Henry Alfred Poarce, Jessie Anne Pearce, and William Shipway Pearce wore proceeded against for - having "failed to support Levi Pearce." Mr. Samuel appeared . for the defendants. Lovi Pearce stated in evidence that ho had "just about got past work." His occupation was "nothing at all." He was 63 years old, and he had loft Home nine years ago. Mr. Samuel: "They have offered you a home." Pearce: "God bless .the home, Mr. Samuel." Pcarco then remarked: "Somo years gap I was taken and thrown out tho back door on my hands and knees liko a d drunken sot." His AVorship remarked he could not go buck into the history ■of things so far off as that. Pearce: "Well then, if you can't accept that as evidence 1 can't say any more." Mr. Samuel said that tho income of tho defendants was small. The best they could do was to offer him a home, and that, ho had refused. His Worship adjourned the matter for a week to enable tho complainant to get a. solicitor, if he wished to do so. His Worship considered that Peareo was too deaf to hear all that was being said and that ho should have an opportunity of being represented by counsel. BLOWS WERE STRUCK. Albert Wass was charged with having assaulted William Joseph Wright, and W. J. Wright was charged with having assaulted A. Wass. It appeared that the dispute out of which the case arose tool; place in a lodging-house in Adelaide Road. His Worship said that tho evidence was somewhat conflicting, and a blow seemed lo have been struck on each side. Each defendant would be iined 205., and no costs or witnesses' espouses would bo allowed. "SOME MISTAKE." A charge of having, on July 13, stolqn .£2 os. 3d., tho property of P. C. Tcmby, at Ashburton, was preferred against ; , who had been arrested cn a .warrant issued at Asliburtou.

Mr. Pctherick, who appeared for. tho accused, requested a remand till Friday, by which day, he .said, he would bo ablo to satisfy the police that tliero 'had been some mistake. Mr. Petherick's request was granted. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE ALLEGED. Found helplessly drunk tin Glasgow Wharf, on August 13, and attempting to commit suicide, were the counts against George Demtilh. He was' remanded for a week for medical treatment. JO UN SON V ] LLE CASE. Goorgc Alfred Tracey was charged with tlmt, between November 21 anil 23, 1908, at Johnsonville, he committed theft of a number of carpenters' tools, valued at ,£ls, the property of Arthur Scott; also, carpenters tools valued at ,£2, the property of Edward Ewa.rt Welsh. Chief Detcctivo Broberg asked for a rornand. Ho said that, accused liad just been arrested, and it was understood that some other charges would bo. preferred. Accused was remanded till August 23. Bail was allowed. OTHER CASES. John Burns SU-phcnson was ovdered to pay Bs. expenses incidental to tho birth and the death of a child. An order against Herbert Waring for the support of a child wa9 increased from ss. to Gs. per week. An application by Ada Rebecca M'Fadyen to liavo an order for maintenance cancelled, and the arrears (£5) remitted, was granted. Clarence Vering White and George Stennard wore accused of threatening behaviour in Taranaki Street. They were each fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. White was remanded till August 21 on a. chavgo of having assaulted Charles Henry Davidson at Wainui-o-mata, so as to cause him actual.bodily harm. Two first offenders were convicted of drunkenness and discharged. Another lost tho amount of his bail (10s.). For drunkenness Donald Campbell was fined 205., in default seven days imprisonment.
