' HACKETT BEATS COOKE. The first round of the N.Z. amateur billiard championship was played in Auckland at tne Amateur Sports Club on Monday night, tho contesting pair being Messrs. W. E. Hackeft and J. E. Cooke. The game was one of SCO up, and was played on a standard table, but tho exhibition given was not of a verv high class neither player showing his best form, Mr. Cooke especially being out of touch. The table played verv slow, and the balls kicked somewhat, 'which probably affected both players. Mr. Hackett rail out an easy winner when his opponent's score was 211. The best breaks by Mr. Hnckett were 45, 32, 30, 25, and 21, while the bfst Mr. Cooke could do was 11. Mr. Hackett had 71 cues, his average working out at 7. On Tuesday night Messrs. Burke and Martin were to have met.
