THE LATE MR. T. E. TAYLOR

(By Telegraph—Press' Association.) Christchurch, August 2. , Mrs. T. E. Taylor has asked the Press Association to express the gratitude of herself and her family for the sympathy extended them during the past week. I "I should very much like to have replied to all tho telegrams and beautiful I messages personally," she writes, "but there have been so many that I cannot hope to answer them all. We have been, immeasurably comforted and sustained by tho sympathy of Mr. Taylor's friends, and indeed of all tho people of New Zealand, and especially by the beautiful spirit of appreciation of our dear one. The kind words that. have, como to. us-from every part of the Dominion havo given .us courage and strength to bear our great lo»s, and wo cannot even try to express our deep gratitude in words." Sir Joseph Ward has cabled from Colombo to Mrs. Taylor :—"Deepest syniptahy in tho death of your husband. Though «:e often differed I admired his courage and brilliancy." At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to-day the chairman (Mr. H. Friedlander) - moved: "That .the. Lyttelton Harbour Board record their deep sense of regret at', tho death of their late colleague, Thomas Edward Taylor, who has been a member of the board since February, 1809. The board further' desire to place on record their full recognition and appreciation of the valuable services rendered by. tho late Mr. Taylor during the period he has held a scat on this board, and members also respectfully desire to convoy to Mrs. Taylor and family their sincerest. sympathy with them in their bereavement." The motion was spoken to by several members and carried.

Timaru, August 2. At a well-attended meeting to-night, it was decided to open a Taylor Memorial Fund. A.committee of 30 was elected, and it was decided that lists be so circulated as to give everyono in tho town and district an opportunity of contributing..The opinion was expressed that very few people in Timaru would fail to contribute. A fair sum was subscribed in the room.
