A strange story has gained currency concerning the. alleged practice" in Dunedin of what is described in the United States as "graft." Somo little time ago incidental to changes in the system of administration an official of an important local body retired from the position he had been occupying. The local body decided to vote binron retirement a bonus equal to six months' salary. It appears that one member of the body concerned remarked to the official that the vote was worth a new suit to him. This remark was treated as a joke, but the official got a shock when he received an account for .£B, the cost of a suit supplied to the member. Members of the local body have been expressing their feelings very strongly, but the person implicated is no longer associated, with them ou this particular body. lie is, however, connected with the administration of other local institutions.
