A HUNDRED THOUSAND HOMELESS. By MocraDli— Press Association—CoDSTleh! Constantinople, August 1. The damage done by the recent fire at Stamboul amounts to .£5,000,000. A hundred thousand people arc without shelter. It takes two hours to drive round the devastated area. Thousands arc living in orchards and vineyards. The danger from cholera is alarming. Many persons were burnt to death. Sonio t;ok refuge in underground cisterns, where rain-water had collected, but tho burning houses collapsed, and they were boiled alive. Arrests of suspected incendiaries continue. Captain Sir A. H. Young, G.C.M.G., Colonial Secretary of the Straits Sctttemo'jls since 19(10, has been appointed to succeed Sir John Anderson as Governor of the Straits Settlemnts.
