Sykes, Opposition cnr.di> date for the Maslcrton seat, addressed a. largo audience indho Town Hail to-night, the .Mayor presiding. Mr. Sykes dealt exhaustively with tho laud question, declaring himself a freeholder, with limitation of area. Ho also urged that Native lands should he speedily opened for settlement. He announced liimsslf as opposed to the second ballot, and in favour of a n construction of tho Civil Service under a Civil Service Board, reform of the Legislative. Council, substitution of a Wanes Hoard tor tlio Arbitration Courts, insurance against sickness and unemployment, and tho general policy of tho ltciorm party. In answer to questions, the candidate stated that he favoured compulsory .military training, tho bare majority at licensing elections, and an eight hours day lor alf workers. He opposed removing tho duly from food, and said that he would deal with the referendum at a later da e. A motion of thanks was passed to Mr. Sykes, and ho was declared to bo a lit and proper person to represent Maslcrton in Parliament.
