Beef generally sold at about the previous week's prices. Rood young store ewes maintained their values, but hoggets showed a. decline. The lat lambs ollcred were of inferior and ordinary nnality, and made only. moderate prices. There were only a few new season's lambs penned, and they sold well. Vat "sheep of all classes were in good demand; store cattle were dull of sale, and dairy rows were selling as well as of late. Fat pigs were in demand, and stores met. with a drawing sale. The yarding of store sheep showed an increase in numbers as compared with tho previous week, anil was. made up principally of hoggets and ewes. There was a, much weaker demand for hoggets, and prices were down about. 6d. to 9d. per head, flood two. four, anil pix-tooth ewes sold rather better than last week, but, lowconditioned lots were easier. There was a moderate yarding of fat cheep, though much larger than last week, and the range of finality was very wide, running from inferior wethers and ewes to specially prime 'show wethers. There was a keen demand on the part of the butchers, who had been able to obtain only short supplies the week before, and consequently all classes sold well. The range of prices was: Kxtra prime wethers, to 535.; prjme, ZOs. to 255.; medium, 16.;. 6d. to 19s. ba.: light. 13s. 3d. to 16s. td.: extra prime ewes, to 295. 9d.; prime. 17s. 6(1. to 235. fd.; medium, 14s. 6d. to 175.; aged and light, 9s. to 145.; extra prime hoggets. 265. to 3Cs.: extra- nriuic merino wethers. 18s. 9d. to 21s. Dimedin, August 2. Great surprise awaited patrons of Hurnsida saleyards to-day. Only 81 head of cattle were forward, and a keen sale eventuated with such a small yarding. The position was accentuated by the fact that butchers had only small stocks on hand, and they had to buy or have no supplies. Cattle which ordinarily would fetch £9 or £10 sold at £13 10s. One butcher declared that the memory of no man could recall such a day when prices had been so high and the quality of the cattle offered fo inferior.
