SCRATCHINGS, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 1. Umcraboy has been scratched for the Trial Hurdles and Grand Slam for the Winter Cnp at the Grand National meeting. Miss Explosion Was scratched for all engagements at the Grand National meeting at 2.30 p.m. to-day, and White Cockade was scratched for all engagements at the same meeting at 3.30 p.m. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Br Gwncoe.] The Woodlands Hunt Club meeting will bs held on the Pahiatua Racecourse today.' Latest news from Riccarton states that Jterrie Zealand will not be a starter fti the Winter Cup. W. Y'oung, who went south last evening, will ride Dnil and Continuance in tho National double. Hoanga is generally held to be a doubt- ; ful starter in tho Natkxial Steeples. This conclusion is arrived at because it is known that "Rangi" Thompson has been engaged to ride Paritutu. The snme horseman will have the mount on Paisano in the Grant) Nntional Hurdles. To Whetu, who has been spelling since the Napier meeting, has again joined the active brigade at Fcildiug. Another horse which has come in after a long spell is Winchester, who struck himselt during the Wanganui Steeplechase, and has been turned out 'since. He looks ali the better for his enforced term of idleness, and should be a useful hurdle horse this spring. Amongst, the passengers by the southern, boat last night were Jlcssrs. G. B. Oman and J. Lucas, the respective owners of the Gisborne hurdlers, Paisano and Continuance. Boyne Water has left C. Carmont's stables at Levin, and is now trained by A. Watson. It is understood that Sir Frisco has run his last race, and will take un stud duty this Mason. This seems to be the only course opeu to his owner, as the bay horse has "turned cunning," and will not do his best. In the Winter Oats at Trentham he got a very liberal application of the spurs, but he ran in the rear the whole way. '. W. D. Young, brother of the crack hurdle horseman of that name, is a regular rider of jumpers on tho Feilding tracks, and, yesterday morning, he schooled four of A. Attwood's team. Young is a very light horseman, and can in to scale at 7st. He is a good, patient rider, and promises to make a name for himself this season.

It is now stated that T. Pine has been engaged to ride Compass in the National Hurdles. Wniputcre and Tc P»u will not be taken south to fulfil their engagements at the C.J.C. winter meeting. • The National Hurdles field is slowly dwindling, and, of the original '<!> acceptors, only about half that number will wo tho post. Word has been received of the death of St. Clements (St. Legcr—Saranella), who, in his racing days, was one of tho fastest sprinters in New Zealand. St. Clements was bred by tho latq Mr. W. Fercival (for many years secretary to the Auckland Kacing Club), and, during his racing career, the son of St. I.cger was an inmate of F. Macmancmin's stable. After being retired to the stud ho sired a number of good winners) with but limited opportunities. Among the best of Ihem mav be mentioned (Jiadiole, St. niaimcr, Golden Kagle, St. Bill, Clemora, lilcroze. and St. T'oney. At the lime nf his death St. Clements was 22 years old. FIXTUHES.
