A flutter of excitement was caused in Petono la?t night when about 100 youths, bound for tho Butt Drill Hall, to undergo the preliminaries for enlisting under tho present regulations, paraded the main streets with mouth organs, whistles, etc. Like tho proverbial snowball the- pro-cos-ion gathered more- boys as it proceeded ifter endeavouring to sing scyernl patriotic sonjs, one was hit «pon a local; iscd version of "John Browns Body. This was lustily sung on the march to the Drill Hall. At Lower Hutt he lad. «ere ever so much quieter, a ?d t°oktlio business calmly. At tho Drill Ha 1 everything was noisy for a start, but, after Sergh-Major Millet and his helpers got to work, order was soon established. PETONE ROWING CLUB. j The annual meeting of tha Petone Rowin" Club was held last evening, Mr K. Mothes presiding over an excellent attencl"rhe report and balance-sheet (published yesterday) were adopted. Officers were elected as under :-Patron, Mr. I!. Mothes president, Mr. A.baunders; vice-president, Messrs. J. N. Martin, D. Ross, C. F. Lowin, A. Coles, H. J. Palmer, E. Short, J. Cotton E. Barnes, and J. Fletcher; captain, Mr. i 3. iremain; vice-captain, Mr. L. Druinmond; secretary,. Mr. H. Adunison; treasurer, Mr. J. Wilson; committee, Messrs. L. Dnimmond. .F. Williams, P. Parrant, A. White, S. M'Farlane, P. Arrowsmitn, aud A. Hume; selection committee, Messrs. R. Moore, B. Tremain, and h. brummond; delegates to association, Messrs. Norris, Tremain, and Drumnioncl; race committee, Messrs. Parrant, Arrowsmith, White, E. Cruickshank, and J. Lynskey. Messrs. B, Moore and \Y. Brown were elected Fife members. Trophies for competition were donated by Messrs. Edmonds aud Moore.

Nicholson, ' AY. Gardiner, 0. Trcadwell, and J. L. Barlow. The balance-sheet showed a credit ot Mi 13s. 7d., while assets exceeded the hathat ao rf | club bo formed in connection with tho main club. The motion evoked a lengthy discussion, and was eventually carried. It was further resolved that the committee bo authorised to proceed with the converting of one asphalt court to a grass court for a- croquet lawn. GENEROUS DONATION. Mr Baldwin, chairman, of the Hutt District High School, has given a donation in the shape of a free place in secondary education, to the pupil obtaining the highest aggregate marks in the school, and also a prize for the pupil who obtains the highest marks in the Kings Road SchoolSCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. The Hutt District High School Committee have resolved to spend the sum of £60 on improvements to the grounds of King's Road School. A deputation from the committeo will wait upon the Education Board, to determine what work shall be done_
