MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, July 31. A delightful change in the weather occurred this morning, tho day breaking spring-like and mild. The ranges are still capped with snow, however, and frosts arc almost sure to follow. Ah interesting debate takes place in Murray's Hall to-night between teams representing the Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society and thß Elietahuna IJranch of tho Farmers' Union. Tho subject for debate is the land tenure. Word reached Mnsterton on Saturday of the djatlrin Auckland cf Mr. H. A. Welch, who was for some years a tradesman in this town. Tho late Mr. Welch had been ailing foT a considerable time. He leaves a widow and three daughters. Not a single bankruptcy has been registered in Masterton durinpr the month ending to-day. Sinos tho beginning of the year there have been twelve bankruptcies, as compared with fourteen for the same ■period last yrar. It is feared that the young man Marsh, who was acting-postmaster at Akitio, and who has been missing for some weeks, has been drowned. During the month ending to-day, twenty-three births, four deaths, and one marriage have been registered in Maslerton. Tho scenery and wardrobe for the comic oiwra "Dorothy," which has been purchased by the Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society from the New Plymouth Society, arrived on Saturday. A number of cattle in the Pongaroa district havo recently died through catintr tutu. ■ • Mr. T. Quinn, Tailway stationmaster at Eketahuna, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster at Pahiatua. Tho measles epidemic has reached tho Mauriceville district, and is affecting old as well as young. The Masterton A. and P. Association has now a membership of S"9. It is hoped that this number will he increased to 1001) during tho ensuing year. Some monHis back Mr. William Perry, ex-president of the Mastorton A. and P. Association, offered an area of ten acres on his well-known Penrose estate for the purpose of an experiment plot. It is suggested that the Agricultural Department might see its way to make experiments on this plot during the coming season.

It is probable that some of the settlers in the Wairarapa district will this year try the experiment of putting mnizo into ensilage. Tlis Natives of Masterton are at present retailing: potatoes from door to doer at 12s. fid. per sack. Mr. W. Perry told the members of the Masterton A. and P. Association on Saturday (bat ho had this year )iut down one hundred acres in swedes, and had -secured one of the best crops he had ever grown. Tho crop had, he said, been lato sown, and the plants were vigorous. The Masterton Gun Club held a "shoot." at Lansdowue on Saturday. In a sparrow match, Mr. R. Buick succeeded with every bird, whilst Mr. F. H. Taplin was the most successful m the clay pTneon match. Tho "Agricultural Journal came in for commendation at tho meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association on Saturday last. Several members referred to the Journal as being of great va.luo to tho farming community. Medal competitions in connection with tho Masterton Golf Chib were played on Saturday. In the A grade, Mr. A. B. Lawrenco was most successful, and, in the B grade, Jlr. TC-r W. Gabitos. The club plays a match with leatherston on the local links on Saturday next. A smoke concert in connection with the Masterton Drivers' Union was held on Saturday night. About sixty were, present, arid a most enjoyable evening was l'*oolinu reference was made to the lato Mr. T. K Taylor in several of the Mastnrton chnrclus on Sunday. Subscriptions aro bein? raised locally in aid of the Taylor Memorial Fund. A meptimj of tho local branch of (he Shearers' Federation was held on Saturday night. The business transacted was of a private nalure. An old identity of Masterton, Mr. William Schroder, died in Ihe hospital loday. Deceased was SO years of age.
