Tho funeral of the late Mr. T. E. Taylor yesterday was remarkable for the do. moral-ration. of sympathy and affection. Tho whole route from tho Council Chamber to the cemetery was lined by crowds. In no place were tho people less than two deep, and at particular points they wore twenty deep, It is estimated that 50,000 pooplo were in the streets. Ten thousand gathered outside tho cemetery pates, and the crush was so great that tho authorities were compelled to exclude the general public from the grounds. I'eo* plo drove in from the country in hundreds during tho morning, and the trame arriving between 1 and 2 o'clock were crowded to their utmost capacity. Them wore evidences of deep tooling everywhere. It is doubtful if such another funeral has ever been seen in New Zealand; certainly it was unparalleled to far as Christchurch is concerned. ' ' At the meeting of tho Canterbury Collego Board of Governors to-day, reference was made by the chairman (Mr. J. C, Adams) to the death of Mr. Taylor. Mr. Adams said that Mr. Taylor had occupied tho position of Mayor for so short a time that it was not possible to say very much except that he promised to throw into tho Mayoral work the same energy and enthusiasm which ho threw into all the work he undertook. The lato Mr. Taylor was a man who stood out among , his fellowmen. He had certain qualities which endeared him to many. One of these qualities undoubtedly was his desire to ■ uplift humanity, aud the man who devoted his energies in trying to uplift his fcllowiuan was a great benefactor. That was one of the duties Mr. Taylor put before him, and in many ways he was successful. Ho was a man of deep convictions and high ideals, and when he believed he was on the right path ho had that courage of his convictions and would admit of no compromise. Ho' would move: "That this board places on record its profound regret at tho death of the lato Mayor, and offers to his family its deepest sympathy with them in their sad bereavement." The motion was seconded by Mr. Opio, and carried in silence, the members standing". Ashburton, July 31. An Ashburton list in aid of the T. E, Tnylor memorial fund was opened at the "Guardian" office this morning, and was headed by Mr. Hujo Friedlander, who subscribed fifty guineas.
