Favoured with ideal weather the Brooklyn Harriers oil Saturday afternoon held the first race for the Challenge Cup donated to tho club by Mr. L. Cooke, for annual competition. A course of about five miles was picked and trailed by tho club captain and A. Oliver (jun.), at Miramar. Out of an entry of 18, 17 faced the starter. The two limit' men, C. Byrne and W. Wilton (Tjmin.) set a solid' pace right from the start, both men Tuning neck and neck until half a mile froni the finish, when Wilton gradually drew away and ran home the winner. in ; 2Bmin. 17 4-ssec., C. Byrne finishing second a few yards behind. Next 1 came IT. G. Wilson and W. Mansfield (Gmin.) who were both'having a ding-dong go over the last 200 yards, resulting in both competitors reaching the finishing lino'together. F. Byrne again secured fastest time by one second, from M. Cook with F. ITodson third. Byrne is now in the lead for the all-round trophy with G points. The club's (hanks are due to I>. C'ouzens and' Mr. Cooke for their valuable services as timekeepers. Next Saturday a test race will be run at Miramar between Wellington and Brooklyn Harriers to select a team fa represent, tho Wellington Centre at the New Zealand Cross Country Championships at Auckland on August 12. There is keen competition for places in tho team.

A race over the Wellington Racing Club's steeplechase course at Trentham was held by members of the Wellington Harriers on Saturday afternoon. The course, which was in excellent condition, was covered twice—a distance of 2\ miles". All the obstacles were negotiated, including tho water jump. Fifteen competitors faced tho starter as follow:—F. Wilton, !i-ec. (time, limin. t'sec.), 1; W. Press, ."siec. (time, 15mm. 2Sscc.), 2; F. Rowberry, Sscc., 3; C. Lamberg, flosoc.; I'. Hollo, 35sce.; S. Salek, 35see.; J. Johnson, ">7sec.; J. Power, HOsec.; P. Dement, 80sec.; C. ltowberry, scr.; F. Pinckney, Bsec.; B. Curry, losce.; 'I'. I'arrington, iwscc.; IT. Lamb. Soscc.; F. O'Neill, lOOsec. Salek and Rollo were the only two to clear the brush fence and water jump. E. O'Neill led for three-quarters of the first lap when ho was displaced by Farrington, who retired at the end of tho first lap. De-ment,-then led into the back stretch, when he was displaced by Wilton, Press, and F. Rowberry, who finished in that order. Officials for the day were: Judges, Messrs. Bennett and Rollo, sen.; starter, Mr. W. B. Bennett; time-keeper," II r. W. Watt; course stewards, Messrs. Smith and Perkins; handicappers, Messrs. W. Watt and W. 11. Pollock.
