The Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) presided, and gavi! an outline of the aims and olijrcts of the promoters of the movement. 'Iho Men's Free Club, inaugurated by Miss Glcmliiinin'g some months ago, has proved so successful that it lias outgrown the present premises, and larger rooms have, boon secured in the old Fire Brigade Station, and it was with the object of raising funds to furnish those rooms that tho function was held. Mr. l>. Buiek, M.P., in the course of a short address, said that he was iziail to sco tho young men assisting in promoting the good work initiated by Miss Glendinning, and a little further assistance from the public would go a long way towards milking tho club the success whicli it deserved to be. ' Some of the principal residents of the town were taking a keen interest in the movement, and this practically meant that its future was assured. Mr. W. I , '. Durward (on behalf of Miss Glendinniiig and-tho committee) thanked those who had given assistance, not only that evening, but ever since the club had been started, and also thanked the speakers for their good wishes. The Palmerston Brass Band and Hanley's Orchestral Band played a number of selections, and the following items wero also rendered: —Piano solo, Miss Irene Grant; reading, Miss Mailman; song, Mr. Eric Pees; ventriloquism, Mr. 11. Fellows,; flute solo, Mr. W. Woolhouse; recitation, Mr. Olliver; violin solo, Master Grant. A dance followed. Tho Manawatu Land Drainage Board met yesterday, Mr. J. Best (chairman) presiding. Full power was given the engineer to restrain unauthorised persons from interfering with the main drain. A communication from Mr. It. D. Knight, of Longburn, in reference to surface water, was referred to the Kairanga County Council. Messrs. Collis and Yoss were appointed to wait on tho Kairanga County Council with reference to a number of culverts which needed attention. Tho estimates for the year ending March 31, 1902, were adopted. The expenditure was set down at £3926. This is £2G under the estimated receipts. Tho Mayor of Palmerston (Mr. J. A. Nash), when,cycling round a corner yesterday afternoon, came into collision with a lady cyclist. The latter sustained no hurt, but Mr. Nash was rather badly bruised about tho arms and legs. A party of Palmerston vocalists gave a concert at Foxton last night in aid of the Presbyterian Church Fund, the entertainment resulting in a substantial sum being raised. The party coinprised: Misses Brown (2), Paget (2), Tonks, Lowe, and Messrs. Jewett and Palliser. They motored home to Palmerston after the concert. Tho Friendly Societies held their euchre tournament last evening, the first roiind being completed. Hibernians beat Oddfellows (M.U.) by 40 games to 32, and Druids beat Orient Lotlgo by 45 games to 37. The competing teams were entertained at supper by the Foresters. Mr. W. H. Herries, M.P.. is to give an address on the political situation shortly in Palmerston, and Mr. D. Buick, M.P., will address his constituents before the session opens.
