CREMATION.
(By T<fleir4*ph.—Special Correspondent.! Christchursh, May 5. At various times it has been suggested that Christchurch should follow tho example of Wellington and erect a crematorium in one of tho local cemeteries, in order that those who desire to adopt cremation in preference to earth burial should have tho opportunity of doing so without being compelled to incur the expense of having the process of incineration performed in tho capital city. . Inquiries made, by a "Press" reporter, however, go to show that in tho opinion of those who liavo good chances of gauging public feeling in this matter, the cremation idea has not yet made sufficient progress to justify tho outlay that would bo involved in tho erection of a crematorium in Christchurch. Tho experience of Wellington in this matter is quoted as being strong proof that the scheme would result in a loss financially. Some of those who were interviewed on the subject expressed tho opinion that if crematoria wero established in each of the four centres in tho Dominion, tho cremation idea might make considerably more headway than it has yet done, owing to the public becoming moro and moro accustomed to tho idea through the knowledge that tho crematoria were there. It is urged that if tho Christchurch municipality does decido to erect a crematorium, a less expensive ono should bo adopted than that built at Wellington. The latter cost £2000, and it is considered that half that amount would bo sufficient to enable a plain but suitable structure to be erected.
