(By Tbtogeox.) Carnival Dates. March 4—Wellington YJiI.C.A. Carnival. March 4.—Swifts Club (Ladies' Branch). March 4—Victoria College A.S.C. Water Polo Fixtures. • Senior. - To-day—Thorndon v. Swifts. February 28—Swifts v. T.M.C.A. March I—Wellington v. Y.M.C.A, Junior.' - - To-day—Swifts v. Wellington B. To-day—Thorndon v. Wellington A, Water Polo. ■ Last Saturday, the second round of tfea senior competition opened with the Wei-lington-Swifts match. After a' well-con-tested game Swifts left the water winners . by 5 goals to. 4. . • '' For the .winners H. Jenkinson'.(2), Frey- , berg (2),' and Willmott scored goals, Willmott's effort being the best of the match, Birss (3) arid Morpeth scored for . thi losers. Willmott (Swifts) and Birss (Wei- . lington) are players with a splendid ■ • knowledge .of the game, but are much too slow and out of condition. E. E. Jenkinson was Swifts' best man. Frey- ; berg played fair, but was too often out of' his place. . Morpeth played well for Wellington,. being m the . thick of tha game all the time. - ■■ The jUnior competition opened with tha : - Swifts-Wellington A match. Wellington ■ quickly secured three goals through the . agency of J. A. M'Lean, but advice from the platform led to this player being well marked.' In the second spell Swifts play, ed with good combination, and secured i goals.- For, the winners P. Wilson (2), ' Grey, and M'Grath scored.- The, most ■ promising man in the match under tb- .■ view was P. Grey and in him Swifta ■ have the makings of a splendid player, J. A.; M'Lean and Blick were .the ..best . of the. Wellington team. ' The other junior match, Wellington B v. Thorndon, was exciting from a spectator's point of "view as both • sides, exJ cepting. tho goal-keepers, were fighting ■ ■ strenuously for the ball all. tho. time. Littjo shot a goal for Wellington, thus winning the match for his side. ■ ■ ■ General Notes. ' The hon. secretary .of the .-Victoria.,; College Amateur Swimming Club has for* warded the. programme oi the first annual carnival to be held at the . Wellina* • ton , College; Baths on March 4. All . items, excepting . tho life-saving exhibition and visiting officials' Tace, are club events. The club oflo9 yards should produce a good finish.

Tho centre has granted the Wellington and YiM.C.A'. Clubs permission to - hold a joint-carnival on! March 4. The joint.committee has already settled, down fa;.--work in good style, and promise:to holfl. ■ a good carnival. - The entry list is Ellin J up rapidly, nnd competitors' should _ sea that they do not leave their nominations later than Monday next. Since the championship meeting Stran« • ger, of the Wellington Club; has not beea training, but is a certain starter in tha 100 Yards Provincial Championship. . On Wednesday night Heafy was.resp«»> siblo for a gobd performance, winning lus heat in the 150 yards, (Wellington Clut-), V for the President's Cup, in lmin; IGsec, • Should he reproduce this form .'in • tlto '; final, he oiigfit to'just about -win it. • y "■NsiatoT," of- "The Eeforee," comment., ing on the recent New Zealand* champion- . ships,' says:—ln New., Zealand Beg. Healy does not appear to be fulfilling tho promise 'he gave before leaving Sydney..; Ha - has not. improved 1 as might reasonably - have been expected,'else Champion,Wei.'.son, and Co.'should hardly bejavinjrhim .' the go-by. Five years since Keg. Healy , swam tho mile 'at Lavender .Bay I3ath3 .. in?2imihti, ; 46sec., Zealand's i-topi - -; in.2smin. ; 18sec. ; Four years ago Beg. swam a'good second to" his brother Cecil,*', in tho New South Wales quarter-mile; which ".'occupied omin. l 26sec., rand ,was ; contested at" Manly-— a by no means fast course—yet we learn by cable that on : Wednesday- last, at Wellington- Baths; .' Champion and C.\Welson beat the Sydney forefronter in smin. sSsec. : Evidently the Dominion's clim'ate or waters are not happy ..for Beg.;. ■. .. '.j Long Worth, winner. of the 1320 yards • and one mile championships of Australia recently, surprised - his ' best. friends 'by swimming hii 100 yards relay, in the 500 •: yards Eastern District Teams'. ship, in 57 2-ssec. • Such a speedy-sprint was 'never expected, of. libngworth, who,, on'that performance; bids - fair to become ... an all-distance champion. - Thero is no doubt abouthim being'the best stover wo have; and on Saturdays, feat, if. it bo aocepted as in order, he is at least as good ■. as any other sprinter in. Australia. At Hose Bay Club's carnival recently, , Alec. Wickham, starting from scratch m - • the 100 yds. club breast-stroke handicap, finished second,- three yards away from T. Sinclair (20sec.), in the world's: record time of' lmin. 13 2-ssec. .Of courso, this performance ha? had ho, official recognition yet. Just how the clever! coloured , swimmer managed to credit Himself with such - a'remarkable' feat (writes "Na- ■ tator") I am . unable to' say, through riot having been an onlooker. * Wickham's - latest achievement; recalls his; lmin. 13.. i-ssec.: for . the : breaststroke championship of Australia in Bns- ' bane a week.ortwo ago., as ' well as tho fact that the responsible official, or officials, declared the contest no. raco because > none of the • competitors had l complied with tho conditions laid down. A re-swim resulted in .Wickham. winning again, but he occupied lmin: 17 2-osec. the second time,; which ;l would,': to some ex- • tent,, appear to justify the "no race"--verdict, though it could hardly have been expected that' any one of the competitors could swim--as fast in the second effort as he did : in the first. When the matter comes before' the Council of the Association we will know more about it, and, I hope, see the performance fill that position in tho book to which' the figures - entitle' it. ; ; -f . -'i.J. Dawson, Otago's representative at the New Zealand Championships, won the; 100 yds. championship, his' brother taking second' place. As his time was 73 4-ssec., ho must have".had an easy, victory. - : . ■ •, The school championship will be decided" to-day at the Th'orndon baths, and in my 'opinion it will'take a good man to beat A.. M'Corlie, • who performed v well - last ' year,
