PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

' . ■■ ■ +-■ ■ , (From Our SDecial Correspondent.) : . Palmerston N., January 25. The Methodist Church authorities have decided to erect a new. church in Broad Street in reinforced concrete. The new building will be 65ft. by 40ft. in the main structure, of handsome design and with a lofty spire. It will be of sufficient dimensions to seat nearly five hundred people. Mr. Bennie, architect, of Wellington, designed the building. At last night's meeting of the. Palmerston Borough Council (the first held since tho holidays) attention was called to the furious manner in which some motorists drive through the streets, motor-cyclists especially. It was decided to ask the police to take action in the matter, and also to send a remit to the next Municipal Conference with a view to securing an alteration of the law so as to, deal vigorously with motorists who offend .in this fashion. The engineer reported that scarcely any water was now running over the lip of the dam at tho waterworks intake. - It had, in fact, ceased runningon several occasions during the present dry weather. Tho matter was. serious, as, if the present dry weather continued, there would certainly bo a shortage of water as the :fifteen-inch mains .conveyed tho water' fastei jfcbai. :it filled into the dam from Tiritia stream. In this connection the Mayor reported that the recent meeting of ratepayers had negatived ■ the..p.ropos.al t to raise dam, and thus provide'.'more storage'capacity, and bo did not therefore propose to go on with the poll. The. proposal to provide mechanical filters had been accepted, and a poll of ratepayers would be taken in duo course..- . : . t ~:_ A Tho additions to the College' Street School are being pushed on-.with vigorously by tho contractors, and .it is hoped to have them completed by the time that the school reopens—next week. A special meeting of the. Kairanpi County Council is to. be held next week to fix the day for the Statutory. halfholiday. The Palmerston Borough Council has fixed on Wednesday (as usual) and it is not likely.that the County Council will decide: on any other day. ■ • ■■ A conference of local bodies.interested in the maintenance of the Manawatu Gor"0 Road is to bo held shortly, the object being to endeavour to induce the Government to take over this road. The Palmerston Borough Council has decided to have the Opera House lit by electricity. It has the power for running the pictures, and can therefore quite easily arrange the lighting. . Tho Palmerston Borough Council has a- flock of. about forty breeding ewes which it utilises ior keeping down thegrass on the reserves on the esplanade. Last year it made a profit of £13 out of the ewes, from the sale of lambs and wool.
