OHARIU

A sale , of work in aid of tho funds of (ho Oharin Hall was held in Mr. Beech's grounds on Anniversary Day. Mr. S. Bryant,-chairman of (he Hail Company Committee, in a brief .speech, explained the object of'l he bazaar and gave "a short sketch of the initiation and the various vicissitudes of tho hall,' which' , is inidoubtcdly a valuable adjunct (o the social life of the district. .Mr. J. P. Luke, M.1 , ., who was accompanied Ijy-Mrs. and Mis;. Luke, opened the proceedings, and in addressing tho gathering expressed his plc-asuro at limling tho fair conducted in the open air. He was sure that it'must call to the minds of the older settlers the functions of (his nature which were held on tho village greens of the Old Land. In connection with the bazaar a sports program mo was got through. Of tho principal events, the. following were the results:—loo yards flat: P. Doyle, 1. 220 wards shareholders' race: F. Field, 1. -HO yards flat: P. Doyle,.!. Throwing the hammer: J. E. Bryant, 1. Putting the shot: E. Field. 1. High-jump: P. Doyle, 1. Guessing.the .weight of a sheep and lamb brought out many: competitors. The dressed weight of the two combined was 1001b., Mrs. T.: P. Bryant : proving the winner,' guessing the exact weight.- Tho committee express gratification at tho largo attendance of the outside public, who contributed te the capital net result of .£55 for the day. Much of tho i;uccess was duo'to the work and organisation of the lady helpers.

FEATHERSTON

A serious accident happened to Mr. W. Bentoii, builder, of Featherstou, on Tuesday, evening. .It appears that ho was engaged in cleaning-out the generator of the acetylene gas, and took .a lighted candlo-with him into, the shed where.tho generator was., .A violent:. exnlosion took place,- the major" portion- of the force of which .-appears to. have struck, Mr. Benton in the, face.. Ho was much burnt, and unfortunately . the accident'.- appears to have seriously affected his.oyes.

A meeting of dairy farmers was L;ld at Kongotea on Tuesday,- with Mr. John Sanson in the chair, to deal with offers made for. pigs which had been sent to tho longburn freezing works for export but had been rejected. It was pointed out that tho inspection, of nigs tor tho Homo market is so rigorous-" that any animal which is absolutely free from disease,- but which maybe suffering from a. slight cold just at tho tiiuo it is killed, is not allowed to bo exported. Ah.Chong, a.well-to-do storekeeper here, died suddenly this afternoon.
