THE TURF.

■ »- _ RAGING AT TRENTHAM. SECOND DAY. CULPRIT WINS THE STAKES. VICTORY FOR LADY MEDALLIST. Yesterday's glorious ...holiday weather Ircw a very large crowd to Trentham for tho second day of the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting. Throughout the day there was brilliant sunshine, with bcarcely a breath of wind, and as the grounds and the track were in excellent cider, . the conditions for a good day's sport could not have been hotter. Fields, in. the majority of were, of good average size, and many of , v the results provided 'excitement. • Principal interest centred in the Wellington Stakes, in which tho champion two-vcar-olcl', Culnrit, was among the starters. Tho filly-a strong favourite--was in something like her best form, and . eho had an easy victory, none of the other candidates.being able to extend her..at any part of the race. In the Wellington Racing-Club Handicap another.favourite triumphed. This was Lady Medallist; who : registered a brilliant performance by running-tho mile-and a quarter in 2min. G.3-ssec, which is a record for the race,'-and the for the Trentham course. The St. Alwynno mare is one of theanost popular, handicap performers racing in the' Dominion at the present time, and sho met with a good reception on returning to scale. .-•■."

Speculation on the different races was brisk, and,'during tho dav, the sum of £20.238 10s! was passed through tho totalisator as against .£14,217 on'rhe second day. of' the last summer meeting. This is .one of. the largest sums ever.invested in one:day at Trentham and, on this account,, the. total for. the-two, days this year is,in excess of the-first two days of the Cup meeting of 1910. The bookmakers are-dwindling in numbers, but; nevorthe.less; there were.'2s operating on .the 1 course yesterday, 9 inside and 16 outside. Tho-results would be. slightly in. their favour yesterday, though'the double was■well- backed. .Details of the racing are os follow-:—

After the good showing which he had made against Rill on the first day, Laius was made favourite for -the Mungaroa Welter Handicap, but he was again unfortunate enough to suffer-very narrowdefeat, Kilosteri proving a little too good for him. Laius, however, is now in nice condition, and, as he is such an honest performer, he ought to credit his owner with a win before very long. Kilosteri- . appears to. bo a really genuine stayer, always going well at the end of his races. Although no was first to begin yesterday, he could not naco it with Brackon and Esmeh in the middle part of the journey, but came on again at the finish, when the others were stopping.

San Lass and Genius were almost equal favourites for tho'January Welter Handi; cap, but the former did not justify tho support accorded her, as she failed to gain a place. Genius, however, was equal to tho occasion, aud had quite an easy victory after leading all the "way. Genius had not raced on tho first day, nor had his stable companion, All Guns, who won the Disposal Stakes later in the day. Dazzling, who .ran second to Genuis, was also making her first appearance at the meeting, having been "withdrawn on Saturday on account of-the bad time which she had experienced on the -boat during the trip from Auckland. ,

Scratchings reduced the field for the Wellington Stakes to five runners, Sunburnt and Culprit beins bracketed on tho totalisator." Culprit was sent out in splendid trim, and. it was- generally considered that she could not be beaten. Tho. only candidate likely to extend her appeared to be Orton, who defeated the Charlemagne filly at Auckland earlier in tho month, but, on that occasion, Culprit had all the worst of tho luck. That she is easily the , superior of Orion she proved yesterday 'by leading tho whole way and'winning by a good margin. Orton had to bo ridden out.to beat Sunburnt 1 for second "place. Culprit has now won a.good round sum-in stakes, and, if sho is. kept in training for autumn events and goes on tho right way, she must, establish a fresh New Zealand"record for two-year-old winnings.

Lady Reina Was the only withdrawal from tho Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Backers had no hesitation in making Lady Medallist a pronounced favourite, while Maori King and Los Angeles were nest in demand. Lady Medallist was in ■ great heart,'and she ran theirace of..her, life, winning in the excellent time, of 2inin.. C 3-ssec.—a Trentham record for a mile and a quarter. The first five- fur,longs,.with.Vi;.in tho lead, were covered in lurin. 2 3-ssec, and the railo took lmin.■.. 41-.' :'2-Ssco.. -Lady Medallist's, performance was the more meritorious because of tha fact that sho" was last- away, and bad to race on tho outside of the field for portion of the journey. Birkdale, who was hitting out beautifully in his nreliniiuary, was near the rear of the field during the first part of tho race, 'but when tho straight was en.tared .lie put in a fine dash, and passed all but tho winner. Maori King and Los Angeles, wero both, prominent, throughout, but Goldfindcr ran very badly, and appears to have gono. off. ■ -

The FiUherbert Handicap, for two-year-olds, was voted a-really good event' for Counterfeit, who showed roo.d form in tho Nursery Handicap on ■ tho' opening day. Miscount opposed Counterfeit, but at a difference of 331b. in tho weights tho favourite appeared to have tho best of

things. , This proved to bo the case, hut just as Counterfeit appeared to have the race wou, Byron dawned swiftly on the

scene, and snatched-victory a lew yards from the post. The winner- is by Danube's sire, Martian, from Greek Maul, dam of All ,Guns.'

No fewer than thirteen starters- filed out-for tho Douro Cup. The defections included Nithsdale, who must have had a great chance on track form, but he struck :himself while working on Sunday morning, and was not fit to take part.in the race. ■ As A. Oliver had declined the mount on Rill to ride Colleen Mary, the

latter was made a strong favourite, -with Zealand next in demand. Rill, on whom Reid had the monnt, was .comparatively neglected. She created, somewhat of a surprise by beginning smartly, aud winning by nearly half a length from tho favpurite. The latter was going well -at tho half-mile post, when she received a somewhat seve"re bump, and this lost her a lot of ground. Otherwise she might have reversed positions, with Rill.

For the Disposal Stakes, All. Guns was a good favourite, and won comfortably. Ho was submitted to auction after tho race, and was bought iu for 100 guineas. Gipsy: Belle's withdrawal from the last race caused Full Rate to bo made a slightly better favourite than Dearest, whilo Obsono.was next in demand. The lastnomed began'smartly, led throughout, and won -by about three lengths- from Full Rate. The latter is'a wonderfully consistent performer under heavy weights, and if his last dozen performances be considered it will bo seen that he has an

exceptionally good record as a sprinter. Yesterday mares did not play such a prominent part as on the first day, hut they captured three out of the four principal races.
