English mails via Suez and an Austra- j lian mail arrived in Auckland by the Victoria at 6 o'clock last evening. The Wellington portion of tho mail will arrive by to-day's Jlain Trunk express. The Moeraki, with an Australian mail only, left Sydney for Wellington at 2 p.m. on Saturday. She is due here about 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Though the Conciliation Council sat until midday again on Saturday it had still further to adjourn the carpenters' and joiners' demands until to-morrow. Good progress, however, was made. Other points settled on Saturday, in addition to those already mentioned, were ths questions ofSuburban, country, and piecework, overtime rates, and workers' com-, pensation. There yet remain to bo settled the important clauses relating to preference, hours of labour per week, and tho rate of a minimum wage. Tho second consignment of meat, consisting of 4800 carcasses, was shipped from tho Wellington farmers' new works at Waingawa on Saturday last. The works had to work overtime to finish tho week's stock. During the next fortnight 20,000 sheep and 400 cattlo have been booked, and very heavy consignments are expected. No fewer than 20 people were in the colls at the Lambton Policc Station yesterday morning Seventeen of these had been arrested in the city and three were from Christchurch. Two of these latter are on their way to the Inebriates' Home at Kotorua. A special meeting of the Johnsonvillo Town Board was held on Friday evening when the engineer (Mr. E. P. Horiuthivaite.ll. Inst., C.E.), attended and submitted working plans of. the water-works and drainage . scheme. Some discussion took place regarding the advisability of extending the services to the higher levels of the township, but it wsjs ultimately decided to connect up where possible in order that tho benefit of the system might bo shared by all who are entitled to them, and it was resolved' to call for tenders forthwith to carry out the necessary works which will involve the expenditure of upwards of XII.OOO.
