At to-night's meeting of tho New Zealand' Cricket Council tho lion, secretary (Mr. F. C: Raphael) made a statement regarding a. proposed visit of the South, African team' to the Dominion. Mr. .Raphael .said.,that .tho. Management Committee' was.' arranging for tho South-Africans to visit New Zealand, and-, lie had,- written to the four principal 'associations.' There was only time to play four matches, and those were arranged to be played at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. The dates fixed were: Auckland, March 10; Wellington, March 17-; Dunedin,... March 23; Christchurch, March 30.. An invitation had been forwarded to Mr. Fitzgerald, the' -manager, of tho South Africaii team, ' who (according to Canterbury enthusiasts who saw ihim in Australia) had stated that t-ho'team was very keen to come, to : the Dominion. Tho four principal as-:SociationsVhad.-agreed to .the, terms,, and had each;.guaranteed £175. The. visit, of tho team depended'on whether they could make arrangements to visit/the' Dominion. He had forwarded a cable to ;Mr. Fitzgerald -confirming his letteroil- tho,: subject, and in all probability, hoj woiild havo a cable message from Mr. Fi'tzgerald next\week when he hoped to be in a position; to announce that-the tour, would take, place. . Ridley said that tho Management Committee were to bo commended for. their action in the matter. He" suggested the establishment of. a fund from gates to Tecoup any association 'that did not get a gate owing to unfavourable weather conditions. The'chairman remarked that ho imagined that the easiest way was to-pool the receipts of matches.. Mr. Ridley said that such a scheme was previously proposed, but had met with opposition. . . Tho chairman, remarked- that-,;tho pooling of tho receipts was the fairest tiling. The secretary stated that it was too late to give elfect to'tho suggestion. Mr. Brittam suggested that it would bo better if the, tour commenced in Dunedin, as the weather in tho south was more reliable at the beginning of March i than towards tho end of tho month. Tho secretary ;said that any. alteration could not possibly be considered now, the associations interested having accepted the dates previously mentioned. Professionals in Shield Cames. '• Tho question of excluding professionals from taking part in .shield matches was discussed at considerable length tonight, a motion being tabled to alter Rule 7 of the rules for challenge matches by substituting "twelvo months" fpr "four months" as tlio period which a prpfessional must resido in a district before being allowed to represent it. Tho main lines.of the opposition to the proposal were that cricket could not be improved if professionals were barred, and that, by watching professionals engaging in actual play, greater educational results, were obtainable^ Thoso supporting the/proposal contended that, in the ease ot. the Plunket Shield, tho intention of Lord .Plunket was to encourage cricket in New Zealand amongst New Zealanders, and not by the importation of professionals. ■ The proposed alteration to the rule was negatived by seven votes to five; Other Business. . ' It was agreed that the Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago Associations shall pay ail annual subscript tion of £5 65., and bo entitled to appoint two delegates; other affiliated associations £3 35., and to appoint one delegate.
