!4N INTERESTING CLIMB. , Mr.. J. R. Denaistoun, of Peel Forest, South' Canterbury, gave a Dominion reporter some, details of his mountaineering .'in the Southern Alps during the Christmas holidays, accompanied . by the well-known guide "Jack" Clark. Mr. Denhistoun reached tho Hermitage pn December 2, and made his headquarters there. His doings on subsequent days included tho following:— Climbed-Mount-Seely (in one day from •the Hermitage); climbed tho Footstool; climbed tho Nun's Veil, with Miss.Denuist'on; and Miss Juliuis (tho fifth ascent);' climbed Elaie do Beaumont, 10,200 feet', with Guide Clark and Miss Julius ' (tho second complete ascent, Miss Julius-being the first lady to mako the • ascent)climbed Mount- Malte Brun, 10,400 feet, with same party (the fifth- ascent); climbed Mount Aylmer,a maiden snow peak; climbed both peaks of tho Minarets and Do La Beelie. Finally, Sir. Dennistoun and Miss Julius, with; Guido Clark, attempted the ascent .of Mount Cook from tho Tasman side'. by . Green's uncompleted route. Leaving-the Haast Bivouac at 11.15 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, by lan- ' ternilight, and using steps in tho frozen snow,- which they had, kicked when it. was , soft, they traversed the Glacier Dome, the plateau and tho Linda Glacier, to Green's Saddle, which they leached 'at G. 45, "'"five' ' less than' Green's time and Maimvaring and Dixon's time in. their most . successful attempt by this 'route. Unfortunately the rocks, wliich from below- had look practicable, were: quite impossible, owing to nearly every cranny and foothold being filled with ice', and. the idea.of any further ascent had to bo abandoned. The climb, though unsuccessful, was very interesting, and splendid views, north and South, were obtained.
