THE ALPS THIS SUMMER.

GREAT CROWD AT MOUNT COOK. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) ■ Christchurch, January 19. The Hon.' Dr. i'indlay, who arrived from'.Mount Cook this evening, states that tho present season at Mount CSci is the best ever experienced, and tho accommodation' is taxed to the utmost, many visitors living in tents.' A noticeable fcaturo was the prosence of a largo number of Australians.

When the new Hermitage has beon built (which will probably bo during the season after next) there 'would be tennis and croquet lawns, and possibly a' golf course. These additional attractio'ns and many very -interesting walks will have the effect of attracting many -who were nonclimbers, but who desired to recuperate. There was a strong feeling that the present' Hermitage should bo left where it is to meet the exceptionally heavy demands for accommodation. Climbers aho agree that this is desirable, and Dr Fmdlay. intends placing their views before the Minister in charge of tourist and health resorts. A new bridge is being erected over the-Hooker River, which will enable motorists to reach tho Maltc Brim hut easily. At present the terminal face of tiio Mueller Glacier is moro interesting than at any time that ho.could remember during the past twenty years. Tho Hooker River has left the old bed, and, (lowing under the glacier, had created some of the most majestic ice pinnacles which ho had evep seen. .. Great changes were talS mg place, and large ice flows were continually going .down the river. -
