EDUCATION OF CATHOLICS. CONFERENCE AT SYDNEY. Hi' Telccraiih-Press Association—Copyright Sydney, January 10. The Catholic Education Conference convened by Cardinal Moran adopted a series of resolutions similar to those adopted by tho Catholic University of the . Uniteji States—defining .the position of the Church with reference to education. These set out that that intellectual education must not be separated from moral and religious instruction; that religion should bo tho centre round which other instructional subjects should be grouped; and that tho spirit by .which they were permeated, far from lessening tho need of moral and religious,training and tho advance of educational methods, rathei emphasised that need. '
Provided the essentials of Christian education are secured, the Church welcomes whatever science may contribute towards the rendering of work in the school more efficient: :
Catholic parents are bound ,in conscience to provide for . the education of their children, either at homo or at schools!of the right sort.-; ■Another series of resolutions dealt with the primary education methods in Catholic schools.
SECONDARY EDUCATION, (Rec. January 19, 9.15 p.m.)
Sydney,. January 19/The Roman Catholic Education Conference has adopted several resolutions dealing with secondary schools. It decided that the standard of proficiency in religious knowledge was of paramount importance. Too.much time should not be devoted to music, as it interfered with other studies, A system, of granting leaving certificates was decided upon, and it was considered that such certificates should admit to Matriculation at the University. '
