MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, January 18. A Masterton fruit-grower has made all interesting experiment for treating fruit trees affected with blight, etc. He has bored a small hole in the outer portion, of tho trunk, and inserted sheep dip in this. The rising sap has conveyed the ingredients of the dip to tho limbs of tho tree, with the result that aphis and other forms of blight'have been destroyed. A number of settlers in the Masterton district have this season tried (he effects of nitro-bacterino for tho fertilising of their root and ccrcol crops.. The result has been eminently satisfactory. Tho bacteria is said to increase at the rato of 600,000 in ■ twenty-four hours. It can readily bo understood, therefore, that tho imparting of the life-giving elements lo tho soil has a marked effect upon tho propagation of grain species. Tho fund organised for tho building of a new church for St. Matthew's parish has now reached .£3150. It'is hoped that a. sufficient sum will shortly bo in hand to warrant tho laying of tho foundation stone of the'new building. • The accommodation in the town is likely to bo severely taxed next week, owing to.'-the .largo inilux of people expected for ■the lawn'tennis tournamnt and'swimming sports. -' v .
