"INTERESTING DEVELOPMENTS."

THE STRIKE AT PATEA. IBy. Telcsrapli—Special Correspondent! . . Wanganui, January 16. The conference recently held between the representatives of the employers and wharf labourers on strike at Patea proved abortive. A complete agreement on all points was reached between the men, and two of the employing parties, but Mr. Bennett, representing the Patea-Shipping Company,' held' out on'the-question of overtime, and all efforts to induce him to give way have been fruitless.- The conference was attended by delegates from the Wanganui and' Wellington Waterside Workers, who, in reporting on the matter to their unions, state: "It is expected that .interesting developments will follow upon Mr.-Bennett's datermined stand,' as other waterside workrs' unions throughout .the Dominion cannot stand by,and see the Patea Union trampled out of existence." Questioned as to whether this meant a general strike in support' of the Patea men's 'demands, the Wanganui delegates said.it did not, and that whatever steps might be taken by the other unions nothing in the nature of a strike was contemplated.
