LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Advice received r.t tlie General Post Office Mates that the. mail, which left Wellington on. Decern beV 0. per s.s. Mceraki and connected at Sydney with the Naples mail, per R.M.S. Otway, arrived in London on the afternoon of January 14. A sensation was. caused by a bolt in Hawker Street yesterday afternoon. The driver of a baker's cart had just taken the chain off the wheel, and was in the act of mounting the cart, wlien _ the young horse in the shafts took fright, and bolted down hill. The driver succeeded in reaching his seat, but, finding that he was unable to stop the horse, he jumped off. The horse swerved into Roxburgh Street, and struck the shop of Mr. Lennie, storekeeper, bnakinj a verandah post, and also the shop window. The, axle of the cart was broken l>y the impact, and the horssfhen cried enough. Fortunately th-e driver was uninjured. Tho majority of the Wellington bowlers who' took part in the recent tournament at Auckland returned to Wellington by yesterday's Main Trunk express. They speak in the highest terms of tho hospitality accorded them ill the northern city. Detective Cassells arrested a man last night for alleged theft of a gold granny chain, a gold heart, a gold neck chain, n. gold pendant, a gold, watch, a pair of sleeve-links, and a sovereign (total'value .£ls). from the dwelling of Mrs. Annie Davidson at Petono. During the last week the midnight tram carried 113 passengers, while the Sunday morning cars carried 517 adults and 49 children. The Lyoll Bay 10 p.m. car 011 Sunday carried 55 passengers, the car leaving Newtown at the same time 10H, and the car leaving Constable. Street 79. Tho Hon. tho Minister for Tourist and Health Resorts is sending out parcels of smoked trout, as evidence of the work that is being done at the Department's curinghouse at Rotorna. It is intended to retail tho cured trout at lOd. per lb., at which price orders will bo fulfilled by the engincer-in-charge at Kotorua. A special conference of delegates of the. Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants from all parts of New Zealand is to be held in Wellington on February 6. The main purpose of the conferenco is to elect an executive council directly representing the various sections of the outdoor railway staff. ■ Standing at the foot of the staircase on a suitable pedestal ill the office of tho Institute of Marine Engineers, in Aitken Street, is the statue .which the Hon. J. A. Millar (Minister of Marine) will unveil to-day. The statue is a bronze figure representing "Labour";or "Industry." It is an extremely fine piece of work by the eminent artist Perron, of Paris. The figuro is that of a blacksmith holding a lamp alpft, standing beside an anvil. Ah. inscription is attached 'as follows:—"To my brother Britons across the seas, F. lU-rldawny, Manchester, December, 1910." The donor is the head of the firm of R-cd-daway. and Co., Ltd.. Pendleton, Manchester, one of the chief rubber and belting manufacturers in the British Empire. Special attention (says the "Manawatu Times") is'to be paid to the West Coast districts by the No-License party. With tho encouragement of Mastertou before them the party is hopeful of adding Palmerston, Oroua, and, Wanganui to their scalps, and to this end Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P., opens a West Coast campaign next month, during which he will speak at Palmerston, Wanganui, 'and New Plymouth, and perhaps other towns.

In tho coursc o£ an interesting discussion among Crown landholders, reported in a Kotorua paper, tho fact was elicited that if cattle were kept continuously on"bush" land, without being turned out periodically on to open land for a change, they invariably became poorly and died. One srttler said that this "bush sickness" was generally worse-in tho spring. The argument of tho settlers was that, tho Government, when throwing bush lands open, should also make available certain areas of "change" paddocks on to which the cattle could bo periodically allowed to run.
