PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our' Special Correspondent.) 1 • Palmmton, December I. The Rev. 'I. Jolly, formerly pastor of bt. Andrew's Church, Palmerston, but who accepted a larger sphere of usefulness at .Ponsonby, Auckland, is at present on a. visit to Palmerston. Some.time ago residents of Foxton and others who frequent the beach, formed a committee to build a hall, but ifc has been found that little interest is being manifested in the movement, and tlio committee has decided to return the fewsubscriptions that were received. A • very enjoyable. garden party was held at Mr. B. Eglinton's grounds, in Alexandra Street, yesterday afternoon, in beautiful weather. , Tho- object of the party was to raise funds in aid of .tho new Methodist Church Fund. There was a large attendance of old and young, and while the adults did business at a number of stalls which had been set up, the younger people amused themselves with all sorts l of games. The newly-elected Manawatu Drainage Board met to-day. Mr. Joseph Best was elected chairman. The statement of accounts submitted by the treasurer showed that there was a credit balance of .£1059 Us. 9d. The board decided to pay a visit to tho main outlet; The other business was mostly of a routine character. At the Police Court to-day, a man named William Simpson was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond. Yital statistics for November are as follow:—Births, 37; marriages, 15; deaths, 10. Tho Manawatu Mounted Rifles went into camp at Te Matai, near Palmerston, yesterday afternoon, in a nicely-selected spot. There are forty-five members in camp now, and more will come in today and to-morrow. The officers in camp are: Captain Peach, Captain-Adjutant Palmer, • Limits. Batchelar, Smith, Clovely, and Buick, and Staff-Sergeant Dovey Yesterday was devoted principally to fatigue drill, putting the. camp in order, etc. The men have settled down to solid work, and will put in three parades a day. Lopinc, prefect of police, tho Paris Municipal Council has decided to increase the police force of the city by 500 men during the five coming years.
