. Mr. Henry D. Bates, secopd officer-iu-cnarge of the telegraph office at Wanganui, is retiring from the service at tho end of the year.- Mr. Bates who is the son of'.Major Bates (retired)' and a half-brother to the late. Mr' Charles Waitara (who . died recently at Panhaka), has recently inherited a good deal of property, as one of tho beneficiaries in the lato Mr. Waitara's .estate (of which ho is a trustee) besides receiving largo sums of money from his relatives in England. Mr. T.'Harle Giles, Conciliation Commissioner, arrived at Gisborno from Auckland, on Sunday,'for tho purpose of assisting in the settlement of an industrial dispute here. Ho expects to return to Auckland in ten days' time. A sale of. unredeemed pledges will be held by llessrs. W. H. Horrp.h and Co' Willis Street, to-day and to-morrow.
