ROMNEY MARSH FLOCK-BOOK NO. 48. This flock .was founded in 1894 by 'Mr. T. Sykes (well known in farming circles), from rams purchased from Mr. A. Matthews, one of tho recognised New Zealand authorities on tho breed, and from some of Mr. H. Eglinton's owes, Featherston: Mr. Georgo Sykes purchased the flock in 1898, and he has now been personally supervising it for the past twelve year's. The Sykes flock has its home on a well-kept and wellsheltered farm, situated atManaia, near Masterton, arid the animals are noted, all over the New Zealand sheep-breeding world for their hardiness and constitution. They are fed absolutely on grass alone. The wool has the long, lustrous staple so much in demand on "the American market. Rams from this wellknown flock have been disposed of for many years jpast to various'well-known breeders, amongst them being Messrs. W. Perry, J. ,and H. Holmes, S. Mawley, R. F. Maunsell,- W. H. Hugh, and R. Beetham, while some fine rams have found a ready sale in tho Auckland and Gisborne districts. Mr; Sykes has, also sent? consignments of his' sheep to Argentina (he was one of the first to mako tho experiment), and these realised most satisfactory prices. A confirmation of, the very fine quality of : the' wool from the Sykes flock, is found in 'the records of the wool sales of Mr. A. P. Whatman, Abbotsford, Masterton, in! the fact that tho Abbotsford owner -invariably tops the market.
