GREYMOUTH ITEMS.

(From Our Scoclal CorrcsDonclent.)-' The first contest of the season between the Uokitika and Greymouth Bowling Clubs took place: recently at the former town. Tho weather was beautifully fine, and there, was a. laryo number of interested spectators present. Each club was' represented by six rinks. The Greymouth bowlers left by the 1.5 p.m. train, and reached Uokitika at .3 p.m. They were met at the station by tno president and tho vice-president, and escorted to the green. The ' contest. concluded at. , C.20, the Greymouth Club being victorious, by 22 points. Holutika was "represonted by Messrs. J. King, Thompson, Jlauuder, Nalder, Downey, Andrews, 11. Williams, W. Wilson,' Eobinson, Blank,' Benjamin, Stevenson, Wood, Duncan, Braddon, S. King, Scllnrs, M'Naughtou, M'Millan, Beaue, Kenton, S. Williams, Morton, and J. Wilson. The Greymouth players'were: Messrs: Chalk, Duncan, Broad, Kilgour, Ken , ,' Doogan, Smith, Benzoni, Weber, Leitch, Creasej-, M'Beath, Hawkins, Carter, Steuhouse, King, Wilson, Moss, M'Carthy, Skogland, Harper,. Fogarty, Crooke, and Jones.

At the last meeting of the Greymouth Chamber of 'Commerce a was received from the Hon. A. E. tluinness, in which, lie stated that Cassidy and Co.'s mail contract would not expire until December 31, 1912.- 'Die Hon. J. A. llillar and.the Postmaster-General wrote - on the same subject, and prpniised to give the question of a, daily service between Christchurch and tlio West Coast their fullest consideration.. All the local bodies on tho West Coast have decided to cooperate with the Chamber ot Commerce with a view to bringing about the de- j siroil result. It is therefore quite within, tho bounds of possibility that before the expiration of many months a daily mail service between the East and the West Coasts will bo inaugurated. A circular letter was received from the Seamen's Union protesting against the employment of coloured labourers on vessels coming into Now Zealand.- Mr. Stanton, n delegate from the Wharf Labourers' Union, explained in detail the position with respect to Lascar labourers. The Lascar, ho stated, was paid only Mis. per lndiith, whereas the U.Si.S. Company paid their firemen £'J and their sailors j>7 per month. Ho spoke cf tho danger of employing Lascar crews in time of war, and urged upon tho Chamber of Commerco tho necessity of getting better shipping laws. A resolution calling upon tho Government to deal firmly with the subject was unanimously passed.
