Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in Knox Hall on Tuesday, when addresses . were., given and music and refreshments:dispensed. Mrs. J. W. Blackman presided at the annual'meeting of the Ladies' Swimming Club on Monday, when the report and balance-sheet showed a small credit balance. Mrs. J. Pryor was elected president, and Miss K. O'Leary . secretary and treasurer. The following general, committee was also elected:— Mesdames "Scrivener, Nicol, Claughton,Ladner, and Kendall, and Misses Hathaway, Finnis, Burnett, and Gillespie. The-public baths, one of which is reserved for ladies, were opened for the season on Tuesday. - ; : - " ;, ■ A number of :visitorsare expected for the opening of the now fire station in Masterton on Thursday. : The opening ceremony is to bo performed by the Hon. ' "A writ claiming £501 damages for alleged slander has been issued against a Wairarapa farmer. Tho slander is alleged to have been uttered by the farmer's wife.
