This would entitle .them to .return by any car up- to 6.30 p.m. on, week :days, and 1.30 p.m, on Saturdays, jrhey' wantedji Mr.'Wilfgrd went on to .state, to the congestion of the workers' cars'as much as possible. Many cases had been. brought .under his notice of men, who came/into town, for instance, .to .seek "work at. the .'wharf. ..If they :failed. toj" obtain a:: job," in order to get back home by a.[ workers' tram they had to wait v about all day. If these men were ..really workers why should they .'not go back by any tram during the day?' The only check necessary was imposed by the proviso that. tickets, under the new arrangement, must be obtained before 7.30 a.m. , '' ■ - : ; - ■ ' ■■' '• The tramways manager, Mr. Stewart Bichard6oh," stated: that 'at the present time there were IB workers' cars Tunning in the morning.; Under the new arrangement, workers would be able to , travel on. 62.regular cars, and, in addition,'on about c 3O ; special >:cars. Workers would have the • opportunity, of travelling ■ on nearly 100 cars, instead of on only 18, as at present. . ' ' i Councillor Fletcher suggested that the time at Which return tickets could be obtained in the morning should be extended to 7.45. This would meet the casoof workers arriving in the morning by train from' the Hutt and Petone. Councillor M'Larcn also .suggested an extension. .: ' ' The. :Mayor said it was .proposed to try the concession recommended as an ,experiment. When it had been . seen how thenew arrangement worked, further concessions could be considewd.
