THE CHICAGO MEAT TRUST.
' ' QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. The Government was asked by Mr. Okey, M.P., last week whether 'attentionhas been drawn'to the fact that delegates from the Chicago Meat Trust, which has acquired large interests in the Argentine and also recommends the purchase of i'large freezing concern in Sydney, have spent several, months in Nei? Zealand making themselves acquainted with the working of. the frozen meat trade in the Dominion. The reply given yesterday is that' the Government is aware , that the Chicago meat-packers have secured' works in. the Argentine. The trust's position and operations in that country are'.being carefully watched by the Department witli a view to estimating, the influence the trust -may exercise on competition from South America on the world's markets. No information, except that wliich has appeared in the daily, press, has reached the Department as •to the • trust having acquired interests in Sydney. If the representatives of the trust have visited this Dominion, the Government is not aware of the fact. The . whole question'of the world's meat supply, and the influences controlling the same in respect to purchasing, shipping, marketing; and ■ markets,, is receiving careful: attention by the Government in the interests of- the producers of this, country.
