When the scratchings wore posted for the Wellesley Stakes, six two-year-olds were left to" contest the issue. , Pierene, who scorjd such a handsome wjn in,the Hastings Stakes a couple pf weeks ago, was made tho hottest favourite of the day, ; and the ICaramu representative, Miscount, was next in demand. ■ When the' barrier was' released' the pair jumped . but together, and thence' onwards they had the race to themselves. At the: bottom of the straight Miscount held a slight advantage,; but. as they approached it became apparent that Pieliene was not.;' fully, and •it only required her jockey to call on her to win. '. Gray saved his' effort' until about a chain from tho post, when the Achilles; filly put in a couple -of longer strides, and. won by.a'neck. ■; The perforniance .snffiwd ■ prove that the daughter of Achilles is a very high-class filly, and it will require an uncommonly good one toibeat her. -She.gallops with a. low sweeping action, covers a - tremendous lot of ground at each-stride, and'is just.ftuch a neat, truly-shaped, cleanlimbed filly -as one would have expected the great Acbillcs: to sire. -

Poiptiers and Inspection, who had competed in the first race on. the programme, were produced again, in the Final Scurry, and both finished among the unplaced division.
