For some' weeks, past. the. 1 betting andbookmaking fraternity of the city -have been under tho watchful eyo of, the law, for it . had .been* whispered: that:; certain followers of -the -turf had been indulging in speculation contrary to the.. .Gaming Act. This afternoon the plans were .catried further, and two parties; of detectives raided -two' alleged ' .bookmaking establishments in the city. .Half-past two; was fixed as the" hour oL attack," and at that time Chief-Detective Marsack led a raid on the; premises of. -Messrs.;, Ryan" and De Gro'erii-!- in; Durham.: Street,; while at .the same time' the other' party;' headed; by Detective M'Mahon, was in. attendance at the. office of -Messrs.. ; Adams and Philnott, Ranfurly Buildings, Queen Street. When Chief-Detective : Marsack- and . his;' men "entered Ryan's .office, they . found a man named Kicholls acting as an assistant, and' there : were-, two'other 1 men' present. Then .one of the principals entered, and he was followed by five men' who wished to make bets. These men were, admitted by the detectives, and,..in the. words of. Chief-Detective Marsack, "added to the bag." A complete search of the" premises was then made, and all matters relating to the business seized. During the search the, telephone rang several . times, and was attended by .the Chief-Detcctivo. This gentleman : was .instructed :by eeveral well-known persons in -.the city to make bets on' different races at the Wellington meeting.'/"These 'betsi".".remarked.';-.the-detective, "were, of course, duly booked."
