GOVERNMENT LAKE STEAMER.

John M'Gregor and Co., of the Otago Foundry, bavo been notified that they have secured the contract for the construction of the new Government steamer for the Lake Wakatipu service. The vessel will be constructed in the firm's yard at Dunedin, and then dismantled and railed to Kingston, and, after being launched there. 'An order for plates, angles, and raw material will be cabled Homo almost immediately,. Tho vessel will bo a steel ■steamer of' about 250 tons, -with tWo sets of tnple-expanwon engines, capable of developing 1150 horse power, and a maximum speed v of 15 knots She will be capable of carrying' from 1000 to 1600 passengers. It is expects that the vessel will be ready for commission in a little over a year from tho date of signing the contract.
