BATHERS REBUFFED.
. A PETITION THAT FAILED. A petition from some eager bathers received a short shrift yesterday at the hands of the Baths and .Keserves Committee of the City Council. The request preferred was that, the ' Thorndon "' Baths which are at the'present time opened between the hours-of 12 noon and 2 p.m. to lady bathers, should be handed . over during that period to bathers'.' of. the male persuasion, the ladies to be granted tho use of the baths for a compensating .interval at some other, time of the day. So reasonable' did tho petitioners deem their requests that they considered about eighteen signatures sufficient to impress its merits on'the, committee.; The result was disastrous for an efficient counter demonstration and demand had prepared. Against the petition the committee had to seta letter from the principal, of the Girls' High School, strongly .protesting against the change proposed, and a: letter to a : similar effect from '.a city councillor who wrote on. behalf :of several private schools. Under the circumstances the committee:had'no-.hesitation in rejecting the plea of the. petitioners and deciding not to recommend it to the council. It is;.'perhaps/ as well.that the .project thus 'ignominiPusly failed:' - One trembles to think what might have happened to, the petitioners, had ■ they; encountered the. ire. of, the: High : .bchool girls, not to 6peak of their younger sisters at the private schools' who are banded with them in a common bathing, interest.
