", "The .Perfect Paragraph I '.- was the subject/ of a', paper . read by • Mr. C. Wheeler and: discussed .by members of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Journalists' Institute in Godber's room on Saturday evening.' ~ In the course of the paper, Mr. Wheeler laid -down certain rules which, in his opinion, the paragraph writer would do well to follow, dwelling on such points' as' brightness,;brevity, clarity, and correct: ness as to : facts. ■ . The paper led to a general discussion, in which the speakers wore alternately serious and 1 humorous, in their Mmarks, one speaker stating that the perfect paragraph has never yet- been written, and never would be written, because opinions would always differ as they did in other work which aimed at tho impossible—perfection. Plenty of latitude was allowed by the chairman (Mr. F. Earle), and tho-result ,was. a pleasant intermingling of jest and earnests Refreshments enlivened the proceedings. ■

Mr., Edison's .newest' invention is . the lcinetophoiws, a combination, of phonograph and kinematograph, by which moving pictures appear to talk. At a demonstration, a picture ■of a man thrown 'on the screen dropped a cricket ball, and its impact sounded instantly from the floor. The taps of a-hammer, the smash of crockery, and the sound of a motor-horn were also reproduced.
