A meeting which Mr. Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, had arranged to address at Mountain Ash, in Wales, 011 October 20, has been suddenly postponed. , The Master of Elibank, Patronage Secretary to the Treasury, in explaining the postponement, said it wis difficult and undesirablo for the Chancellor to speak at this moment. This has been interpreted in Some circles to meaii that the Veto Conference has reached a critical and perhaps not unhopeful stage in its deliberations on the constitutional crisis. Sir Gilbert Parker, Unionist member/for Gravesend,-; in a letter says it is inadvisable wholly to condemn the proposal for the payment of members of Parliament. Professional politicians would not be procurable if the salary was only £400 per: annum, and the organisations of the two great political parties would, moreover, be able to deter, carpet-baggers. ,Sir Rufus Isaacs, Attorney-General, in speaking at Manchester, said it was not to be supposed that anyone expects the complete reversal of the . Osborne decision, which had closed the door of the House of Commons to wage-eam-ers. Voluntary collections by the unions for the support of Labour members were unsatisfactory, and he would welcome the reduction of election ex-, penses, and evon the making of them a public charge. * , The Labour party is issuing a manifesto, in which it demands the payment of . members, but not as an alternative to tho reversal of the Osborne judgment.
